Increasing Performance by Building a Spatial Index for your ShapeFiles

Performance is always a major consideration with any application. By using Map Suite's built in spatial index functionality, you can dramatically increase the rendering speed of large ShapeFiles. A spatial index will give you the most bang for your buck when you have a very large ShapeFile but only want to show a very small section this ShapeFile on the map. For example, let's say you have a very detailed and large file outlining all of the county boundaries of the United States, and you want those boundaries to show once the user zooms down to 100 miles or less. Having a spatial index will dramatically increase performance since it can be used to find the counties just in the visible area instead of searching the entire ShapeFile.

Building spatial indexes is quite easy and only needs to be done once for a given ShapeFile. Depending upon the size of your ShapeFile it can take up to several minutes to build the index file, but this wait is time well spent since it will improve the performance of your application. One of the easiest ways to build a spatial index is to load the ShapeFile into Map Suite Explorer, highlight the layer in the tree control on the left and then hit the Build Index button.

If using Map Suite Explorer doesn't fit your need, you can always use the BuildIndex method off of the Layer object in code to fulfill your requirements. The code example below shows how to accomplish this:
