Cygnus Work Safe: Ensuring the Safety of Lone Field Workers with a Single Device

Cygnus Work Safe: Solving the lone worker safety problemThe lone worker safety problem: It's long been a concern of companies who have operatives working by themselves in the field, particularly in dangerous environments. What happens in the event of an injury or emergency where the worker is unable to call for help? The resulting delay in response can be the difference between life and death.

Now, ThinkGeo is pleased to announce that we have solved the lone worker safety problem with our new Cygnus Work Safe device!

Cygnus Work Safe is a new piece of hardware intended for use with the Cygnus Track asset tracking system. The device features both a panic button and a configurable countdown timer, the latter of which can be set before a worker leaves his or her vehicle. If the worker fails to return to the vehicle before the countdown expires, a safety alert will be generated and sent to the operator who is monitoring the worker. The device can also be wired to the vehicle's horn to alert potential help nearby.

In one device, Cygnus Work Safe provides a hands-free, automatic way to ensure that help is never far away for workers operating alone in the field. This solution to the lone worker safety problem is just one more step in ThinkGeo's quest to provide customers with the confidence and peace of mind which results from knowing the safety status and whereabouts of their workers at all times.

Map Suite: Understanding Threshold Units

Thresholds are a very convenient way to show different layers of your map according to the level of zoom. This provides the most optimized rendering speed and readability for your application's users. Why use thresholds? For example, you wouldn't want to have a detailed street layer showing at full extent, as it would be slow to draw and would clutter the map. Using thresholds, you can display your detailed streets only from a zoom level of 5 miles down. This means that if the width of the current extent is 5 miles or less, the street layer will show; if it is more, it will not show.

It is important that you first set the map units (Decimal Degrees, Meters or Feet) appropriately in order for the thresholds to work correctly in the threshold unit of your choice.

One threshold unit deserves special attention: Scale. Scale means that a layer will be displayed based not on the width of the current extent, but rather on the current scale of the map (the ratio between real-world distance and its representation on the map). One thing to keep in mind is that by resizing the map, the scale of the map will change while the width of the extent will stay the same.

Armed with this information, you're ready to create attractive, efficient and organized maps that your clients will love using!
